Congressman Fattah to Deliver Remarks at Gates College Workshop in Philadelphia
The Congressman will offer opening remarks at the day-long Gates Millennium Scholars event for high school-age minority males
WASHINGTON, March 27, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- This Saturday, March 28, Congressman Chaka Fattah (PA-02), will deliver remarks to 300-plus high school students and their parents at the Gates Millennium Scholars Bridge Builders Male Initiative Workshop. Designed for minority male students in grades 9-12, the program will feature workshops on college readiness, creating competitive scholarship applications, and understanding financial aid. A panel discussion and campus tour are also part of the day's schedule. Congressman Fattah will welcome attendees to the event, while highlighting his work in Congress to promote higher education.
Since entering Congress, Fattah has worked to promote initiatives that graduate more of the country's young people from both high school and college. He is architect of GEAR UP, the nation's leading college readiness program that was signed into law by President Clinton. Fattah is also co-creator of the Department of Education's Equity and Excellence Commission, a bipartisan group that has advised the Department how to remedy the inequity in the country's public education system.
The Gates Millennium Scholars Program (GMS), was established in 1999 by a $1.6 billion grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to UNCF (the United Negro College Fund) the nation's largest and most effective minority education organization. The goal of GMS is to educate future leaders by providing eligible students with the opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education in the discipline of their choice and continue through to a doctoral degree in seven GMS funded fields.
