Congressman Fattah to be Honored at 3rd Annual Brain Mapping Day on Capitol Hill

WASHINGTON, May 19, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA) will be honored for his efforts through the Fattah Neuroscience Initiative, tomorrow, May 20, during the third annual Brain Mapping Day on Capitol Hill. Sponsored by the Society for Brain Mapping and Therapeutics (SBMT), Tuesday's event will feature an award presentation to Fattah, remarks by the Congressman, and a Congressional briefing providing a comprehensive look at the state of advanced translational clinical neuroscience research occurring throughout the United States and around the world. The Congressional briefing will feature 10 brain mapping experts from across the country who will each present for five minutes on their current work and research findings.

Congressman Fattah received the Pioneer in Healthcare Policy Award from SBMT in February during their annual international conference in Australia; he will be presented with the award tomorrow by Dr. Babak Kateb, a research scientist at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and the CEO of SBMT. The award is presented annually to lawmakers across the globe whose visionary work has successfully advanced science, technology, education, or medicine. Fattah shared this year's award with Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott.  Past recipients include former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, the late Senator Ted Kennedy, Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

Through FNI and his role as Ranking Member on the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, and Science, Congressman Fattah has worked to increase federal funding for brain research. Fattah has called mapping the brain one of the most significant steps towards discovering new treatments and cures for brain disease and mental illness.
