Congressman Fattah Statement on New Alzheimer's Funding for National Institutes of Health
WASHINGTON, June 18, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA), a member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies (Labor-HHS), released the following statement after the subcommittee marked up their FY 2016 appropriations bill which will include a $300 million increase in funding for Alzheimer's disease to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The Congressman is architect of the Fattah Neuroscience Initiative and a co-chair of the Congressional Task Force on Alzheimer's Disease:
"Yesterday, our subcommittee moved to include an additional $300 million in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) appropriations for Alzheimer's disease, bringing the total funding for Alzheimer's research to $886 million. I thank Chairman Tom Cole and Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro for including the increased funding in this year's bill."
"This is a historic investment in our country's fight against Alzheimer's. Together with many of my colleagues in Congress and through the efforts of the Congressional Task Force on Alzheimer's Disease, we are making great headway in supporting initiatives and programs that have the ability to accelerate Alzheimer's research. With a growing economic toll and more than five million Americans currently suffering from the Alzheimer's—plus millions more family members and care givers affected by the disease—we must be doing everything possible to find a cure."
"I am proud that Congress has recognized Alzheimer's as a national priority; we are allocating new resources to raising awareness and increasing the amount of funding devoted to combating this devastating disease."
