Congressman Fattah Statement on March Jobs Report
WASHINGTON, April 3, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman Chaka Fattah (PA-02), a Senior Member on the House Appropriations Committee and lead Democrat on the Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and related agencies, issued the following statement on the March 2015 jobs numbers released today:
"This month's job report showed that the economy gained 129,000 private sector jobs in March, with the unemployment rate remaining steady at 5.5%. With these March gains, the country continues its longest consecutive streak of private sector growth, now at 61 straight months on record.
"While the economy continues to progress, there is much more we can do as a Congress—and as a country—to hasten our economic growth and build a workforce focused on filling 21st century jobs and ensuring America's global competitiveness. We know that smart policy must invest in American innovation, encourage entrepreneurialism, and inspire our next generation's interest in STEM fields. Two weeks ago, I introduced America's FOCUS Act, a bipartisan piece of legislation that would direct unprecedented funding towards critical investments in America's human capital—investments in programs that have proven successful at strengthening the country's economic vibrancy. By intentionally directing our resources to support STEM education, innovation and research, and educational achievement, we can be sure that every American has an opportunity to contribute to the country's economic success."
