Congressman Fattah Statement on February Jobs Report
WASHINGTON, March 6, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman Chaka Fattah (PA-02), a Senior Member on the House Appropriations Committee and lead Democrat on the Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and related agencies, issued the following statement on the February 2015 jobs numbers released today:
"The February jobs report offers continued optimism for the American economy. Last month, 288,000 private sector jobs were added, with the unemployment rate dropping to 5.5%. This marks the twelfth month of private sector jobs gains over 200,000—a streak that has not occurred since 1977. The February job gains also continue the longest consecutive stretch of private sector growth on record, now with 60 straight months of job growth.
"However, while the economy continues to show sustained momentum, we know there is still work to be done as the number of long-term unemployed remained steady this month, with 2.7 million Americans unemployed for 27 weeks or more. Returning these individuals to the workforce requires serious investment in our jobs training and education programs. I continue to champion programs like GEAR UP—which prepares students in low-income communities to pursue opportunities in higher education—and new initiatives, including the President's proposal for two free years of community college. Ensuring that each and every American has the opportunity to graduate from high school and continue their education is critical to producing a workforce ready and able to fill every job opening in our 21st century economy.
