Congressman Fattah Says Nation's Mayors Can Thank Democrats for Pushing Urban Agenda
Urban Caucus Chairman Addresses Mayors After Casting Vote to Aid Small Business
WASHINGTON, Sept. 23 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA) told the U.S. Conference of Mayors Fall Leadership meeting today that Congress is focused on the critical issues that cities face.
"From education to healthcare, infrastructure to employment the Democrats in Congress continue our work to ensure that the needs of your constituents are being met," said Fattah.
Fattah, chairman of the Congressional Urban Caucus, addressed the Mayors moments after casting his vote for a jobs-creating bill to aid small business with easier credit, eight new tax incentives, and closing loopholes that allow overseas out-sourcing.
"Democrats have passed the Small Business Jobs Act to help small businesses create 500,000 new jobs," Fattah said. "And that's just today. We have worked to make health care, energy, and education affordable for all Americans, and address our nation's foreclosure crisis."
Representative Fattah pointed to the Emergency Homeowners' Relief Fund - a provision in the Wall Street Reform Act – that applies $1 billion to the threatened mortgages of millions of unemployed homeowners so they can remain in their homes. The measure traces its roots to a similar Pennsylvania program (HEMAP) that Fattah created while a State Legislator and has provided over $236 million to tens of thousands in need.
Fattah said much has been accomplished under the Democratic Leadership of the House, "We have put into action an economic plan that will bring opportunity and fiscal security to all Americans." He added, "We have raised the minimum wage; passed economic recovery legislation providing recovery rebates for more than 130 million American families; and passed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to jumpstart our economy, we passed legislation that gave 98% of American working families and individuals a tax cut, and we've begun to rebuild America's road, rail, and water infrastructure."
