Congressman Fattah on House Passage of FY 2015 CJS Appropriations Bill

WASHINGTON, May 30, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA), Ranking Member on the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies (CJS), released the following statement after the House passed H.R. 4660, the CJS Appropriations Act, with a final vote of 321-87:

"Today the House overwhelmingly voted in support of this piece of legislation that funds the U.S. Departments of Commerce and Justice, as well as our national science agencies, including NASA and the National Science Foundation. I am proud of the bill crafted with the leadership of my good friend and colleague, Chairman Frank Wolf (R-VA)—most notably, the many bipartisan achievements we were able to produce.

"This legislation reflects the growing needs of our nation as they relate to job creation and economic growth, basic research and scientific funding, the justice system, our weather forecasting capabilities, and the future of space exploration and technology.

"Additionally, this legislation makes significant investments in neuroscience research, youth mentoring programs, and manufacturing—three of my core legislative priorities. In FY 2015, neuroscience funding through NSF will be funded at $105 million—a monumental increase above last year's level and a testament to both the growing need to understand and find treatments for brain disease, as well as the remarkable progress already made in the neuroscience field as a result of recent research.

"Finally, I am especially pleased that last night the House was able to come together in a bipartisan fashion to pass the Thompson-King amendment to the bill.  Authored by my colleague on the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, Rep. Mike Thompson, the amendment strengthens our country's background check system by increasing funding to the National Instant Criminal Background Checks System (NICS) by $19.5 million.
