Congressman Fattah Announces Philadelphia Student as Winner of 2015 Congressional Art Competition
The student from Pennsylvania's 2nd Congressional District will be honored at a national ceremony in Washington, D.C. on June 24; the artwork will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year
WASHINGTON, May 28, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman Chaka Fattah (PA-02) announced that Anthony Cruz is the winner of this year's Congressional Art Competition with his drawing of former President John F. Kennedy. The piece was created using black and white pencil.
Three student submissions were selected from an independent panel of judges and announced as winners during an awards ceremony on May 8 at Congressman Fattah's Philadelphia district office. The runner-up was Barbara Boylan, with a digital print entitled "Malcolm." The third place winner was Quinisha Bullock, with an entry titled "The Face." All three are high school students in Pennsylvania's Second Congressional District.
"Each year the Congressional Art Competition offers young artists in our district the chance to show off their creativity and talent. This year we had excellent submissions from high school students across the district and I am proud to announce Anthony Cruz as the winner," Congressman Fattah said. "I am thrilled Anthony's piece—depicting one of our nation's great leaders—will be displayed in the Capitol for the coming year. The piece beautifully melds a portrait of America's history with his artistic talents."
"Anthony has a passion and natural talent for art. He has immense sketching aptitude and dreams of attending art school to enhance his natural abilities," remarked Cruz's advisor. "I have every confidence that Anthony will achieve unlimited heights in a future career involving art. He has a bright future ahead."
Cruz's art will be displayed at the United States Capitol starting in June, until May 2016. He will join hundreds of other winners from around the country on June 24 to be honored at the Capitol during a reception for all district art competition winners.
The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to offer an opportunity for members of Congress to recognize the creative and artistic talents of their young constituents. Since its beginnings, over 650,000 high school students have been involved with the nation-wide competition.
