Congressman Fattah Announces Art Works Awards
WASHINGTON, May 16, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman Chaka Fattah (PA-02), a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee, announced that 33 organizations in the Philadelphia area will be receiving federal grants to engage the community in the arts. A total of $737,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) will support a diverse range of activities from making fine arts more accessible to elementary schools and their families, to community-building art projects in low-income neighborhoods.
The grant, Art Works, funds projects that excel in public outreach. The funds dispersed through Art Works will support organizations that have proven their ability to create art, engage communities, promote lifelong learning, and use the arts to bring communities closer.
"I'm proud to represent a district that populously engages in community art initiatives," said Congressman Fattah. "The organizations chosen represent diverse perspectives of history and a multitude of modes of expression. I recognize the important role that the arts play in preserving our rich culture and maintaining a strong economy. With the support of these grants, thousands of students and families in Philadelphia will discover the innovation and talent that brings our community together."
The Philadelphia Cultural Alliance estimates that arts and culture, from direct expenditures to indirect benefits, propel $3.3 billion in economic benefit for the Philadelphia area.
