Congressman Fattah Announces $1.29 Million for Justice Initiatives to Philadelphia Organizations
WASHINGTON, Sept. 9, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman Chaka Fattah (PA-02), the top Democrat on the House subcommittee responsible for Department of Justice (DOJ) funding, has announced that the agency has awarded three separate grants totaling $1.29 million to support justice initiatives in Philadelphia. The Crime Commission of the Delaware Valley will receive $470,000 in Project Safe Neighborhood funds to implement an innovative violence prevention strategy that includes offering programs and training to enhance community-police relations. Additionally, the SeniorLAW Center was awarded a $500,000 grant from the Legal Assistance for Victims Grant program and the City of Philadelphia will receive $321,211 in Smart Policing Initiative funds.
"Each grant award is going to support a local initiative that will help make Philadelphia a stronger, safer community. These three programs are working collaboratively with partners around the region to ensure our law enforcement and social service organizations are as effective as possible, utilizing and supporting access to best practices, cutting edge research, and innovative models and training, all to enhance public safety throughout the city," Congressman Fattah said.
The Crime Commission of Delaware Valley will use their funding to help reduce firearms violence in the 22nd Police District through a collaborative approach with local, state, and federal agencies and in cooperation with law enforcement. The SeniorLaw Center, a Philadelphia organization that works to improve the lives and protect the rights of older Pennsylvanians, will use the initial 36-month grant to provide victim advocacy and holistic legal services to subjects of domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking. The program is in conjunction with the Center for Advocacy for the Rights and Interests of the Elderly. The Philadelphia Police Department's award will go towards developing a crime science workshop program for analysts and command staff that will integrate crime science knowledge development and hypothesis testing in decision-making business processes.
From his role as Ranking Member on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science (CJS) and Related Agencies, Fattah has pushed to increase funding for Department of Justice programs. In the FY15 House CJS bill, he was successful in securing an additional $382.8 million in funding over FY14 levels; this included increases to the Justice Reinvestment Initiative and the Office on Violence Against Women.
