Congressman Childers Targeted for Lack of Focus on Mississippi Issues
Southern Democrat Protested for Interfering with DC's Local Laws
WASHINGTON, June 23 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Activists in Washington, DC took direct action today against Representative Travis Childers' (D-MS) recent interference with local safety issues. Rep. Childers is co-sponsoring the bill that would take away DC's autonomy on local gun laws.
The protesters had a clear message: Rep. Childers should focus on the issues affecting his constituents in Mississippi rather than interfering in DC's local politics. Several advocates posed the question, "If Rep. Childers wants to control DC's laws, why doesn't he run for Mayor of Washington, DC?"
In addition to the in-person protest on Capitol Hill, ads began running today in Mississippi media that play off the notion that Childers is more inclined to take action in Washington, DC than represent the priorities of Mississippi.
Through action in the Capitol and his home district, Childers was challenged to drop his co-sponsorship of House Bill 5162 and allow DC's elected officials and residents to make their own decisions about the District's gun laws.
