Congressional Science Appropriator Stresses International Neuroscience Collaboration in Israel
Rep. Chaka Fattah Addressed the Premier International Neurotechnology Conference in Tel Aviv Today
TEL AVIV, Israel, March 11, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today, Congressman Chaka Fattah (PA-02) joined leaders of brain initiatives around the world in Israel to stress the need for more international collaboration as a means of making significant progress in developing new technologies and tools to explore and repair the human brain. Speaking at Brain Tech 2015 in front of an audience of neuroscientists, entrepreneurs, government leaders, and other stakeholders, Fattah reasserted his efforts to grow the United States' commitment to brain research and neurotechnology.
The remarks came during the panel, "Global Meeting of the Minds: Brain Initiatives Around the World," featuring Congressman Fattah and leaders from respective brain projects in the European Union, United Kingdom, Israel, and Canada.
"Fifty million Americans have dementia and other brain illnesses. To gather together the minds that exist and see how we can tackle these ailments together, that is the work that is in front of us; to have a map of the human brain, an understanding of the roadways and an understanding of the traffic on the roadways," Congressman Fattah said in his remarks during the panel.
The Israel visit and panel discussion are an extension of the Congressman's continued efforts through the Fattah Neuroscience Initiative to build more partnerships between the U.S. BRAIN Initiative and other major brain initiatives underway—and taking shape—around the world.
"I'm convinced that the pulse of this international consensus starts here. A gathering together in a quilt, not in a single unbroken piece of cloth, but in segments, we are here to seize the neuroscience moment," Fattah said. "We are here, and we will always be here, because this is the work that will change the world."
Also addressing the first day of the conference were former Israeli President Shimon Peres, Pulitzer Prize-winning author and autism activist Ron Suskind, and Avi Hasson, Chief Scientist of the Ministry of Economy in Israel.
Fattah, the Congressional champion of neuroscience research and funding, was the only U.S. elected official invited to address the conference. During the visit, the Congressman is also meeting individually with President Peres, U.S. Ambassador to Israel Daniel Shapiro, and Ido Sharir, Director General of Israel's Ministry of Science, Technology and Space.
Fattah is the Senior Democrat on the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies, where he leads the fight in Congress to increase federal resources for neuroscience research.
