Congressional Candidate Clyde Williams Collects Over 6,000 Petition Signatures; Reports Over $200k on Hand for Bid to Unseat Rep. Rangel
NEW YORK, April 16, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Clyde E. Williams Jr., former senior advisor to President Bill Clinton and National Political Director at the DNC for President Obama, filed over 6,000 petition signatures with the NY Board of Elections today – over 5,000 more than required to gain access to the ballot to compete for NY-13's Congressional seat. Williams launched an aggressive field campaign several weeks ago dedicated to collecting signatures throughout key parts of the District.
In addition to the thousands of signatures, his campaign has garnered financial backing from high profile donors in NY, LA and DC including former Rangel supporters. To date, the campaign has raised over $270K and has over $200k on hand.
"Our community and our country are at a crossroads. People are looking for fresh ideas and I want to move forward together by putting community above politics. I am grateful for the support and encouragement I have received thus far and look forward to engaging with community members across the District in the coming weeks," said Williams.
Williams, who recently selected his core campaign team, declared his candidacy on March 22. The race has attracted national media attention as Williams seeks to unseat 40-year incumbent Charles Rangel. The Democratic primary is June 26.
