Congress Deals Economic Blow to Cash-Strapped DOTs and Local Communities
Lack of Action May Cause Transportation Programs to Shut Down As Early As This Weekend
WASHINGTON, Feb. 26 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following is a statement on Congress's failure to enact an extension of the transportation authorization, scheduled to expire on Sunday, February 28, attributable to American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) president Blaine D. Leonard, P.E., F.ASCE:
"When Congress failed to enact a new surface transportation authorization six months ago they left state DOTs, many of whom were already stretched to the limit, in a very precarious position. Now that the latest extension is set to expire, they have yet again dropped the ball.
"By failing to authorize an extension before the current funding expires, they are threatening not only the performance of the nation's critical transportation systems, but also local economies, businesses and families who have already been hard hit and are struggling to recover.
"The American Society of Civil Engineers is deeply concerned about the impact this failure to act will have on the nation's transportation systems -- and more importantly, the people and economies they support -- and we strongly urge Congress to take immediate action before any further damage is done."
Founded in 1852, the American Society of Civil Engineers represents more than 146,000 civil engineers worldwide and is America's oldest national engineering society. For more information, visit www.asce.org.
