WASHINGTON, March 10, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman John Conyers, Jr. (D-Detroit), Ranking Minority Member of the House Judiciary Committee, will be the National Press Club Newsmaker at 10 AM, Monday, March 14 (National Press Building, 14th and F Streets, NW, 13th Floor). Conyers is expected to address pending congressional inaction on guns, and will also discuss health care, Afghanistan, jobs, workers’ rights, and the Supreme Court’s threat to voting rights.
Conyers is Dean of the Congressional Black Caucus and is the second longest serving member of the House. He is co-author of the single payer health bill and was a key strategist in obtaining the votes for the Obama health legislation. He is Chair of the Out of Afghanistan Caucus. He is a former Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee and the Government Operations Committee, and he is the author of the Martin Luther King Holiday law. On March 10, 1994, Jack Anderson, while renowned for muckraking many others, wrote a column on Conyers entitled, “John Conyers: Persistence and Power.”
