Conference to Focus on Race in Public Higher Ed

WASHINGTON, Nov. 30, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- University of the District of Columbia President Allen L. Sessoms announced a two-day conference, "Washington, Race, and Public Higher Education."  The conference will be held Friday and Saturday, December 9^th and 10^th at the University campus on Van Ness and Connecticut Avenue NW,  in the Library, building #41.

The conference will open on Friday morning with a panel of three visiting university presidents moderated by President Allen Sessoms. They will explore the limits and possibilities of higher education in the coming decades. 

Four additional panels will present scholars from across the country. Panels include:

Access Secured: Programs that Succeed will explore the three successful programs that have achieved outreach and diversity;

Elements of the University: Change and Continuity will present aspects of historical development in higher education, which have influenced the current character of the university;

A Shifting Landscape will focus on the interrelationship between the District and higher education;

Black and White: Race Then and Now will explore the origins of black studies in the District, African American consciousness in the 1970s, and the role of women's studies on minority campus and for minority faculty and students.

The University is celebrating 160 years since its founding in 1851 as the first public college in Washington, DC.  On the occasion of its anniversary it is publishing a history book of the University, Since 1851: 160 Years of Scholarship and Achievement in the Nation's Capital, which will be available at the conference.    

The conference is open to the community of researchers, academics, educators and public policy specialists interested in past and future of higher education and the District.
