Conference Educates Families and Professionals about Obesity-Related Genetic Disorder Prader-Willi Syndrome
REDONDO BEACH, Calif., Sept. 22, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Prader-Willi California Foundation will host its annual state conference to educate families and professionals caring for a child or adult diagnosed with Prader-Willi syndrome, a rare and extraordinarily complex genetic disorder. The conference will be held on Saturday, October 14 at the Crowne Plaza LAX in Los Angeles.
Symptoms of Prader-Willi syndrome include weak muscles, growth failure, cognitive and learning challenges, delayed developmental milestones, gastroenterological issues, incomplete sexual development, slowed metabolic rate, and its hallmark symptoms: an insatiable drive to eat and behavioral symptoms similar to and often more severe than Autism.
No known medication controls or even reduces the insatiable appetite. Undiagnosed and unmanaged, PWS causes morbid obesity and premature death. But there are management strategies that save lives and improve the quality of life of all who are impacted by this complex medical disorder. A diagnosis of PWS does not have to mean morbid obesity.
This year's conference focuses on Help Here and Now for PWS. Experts will present on such topics as the latest updates on PWS Research and Aging, Health and Dietary Strategies. Parents and professionals will attend breakout educational sessions focusing on age- specific issues: Transitioning to Adulthood, Nutrition, Navigating the Individual Education Plan, Behavior Management and other great topics.
The simultaneous Youth and Adult Program provides persons with PWS and their siblings a fun-filled day with games, arts and crafts, a visit from the traveling aquarium and, and a dance party. There will be a Meet and Greet Mixer in the hotel's bar foyer Friday, October 13 at 7:00 p.m.
