Concurrent Technologies Corporation Engineer Earns International Award for Friction Stir Welding Advances

JOHNSTOWN, Pa., Jan. 28, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- A Concurrent Technologies Corporation (CTC) mechanical engineer has received an international award for his work in friction stir welding (FSW).

Kevin Colligan, a CTC advisor engineer, leads many of the company's efforts in FSW. He has published several technical papers and holds patents in developing FSW for practical applications. FSW is a solid state process that joins two pieces of metal with the use of a rotating pin that stirs the materials together. FSW makes possible very high-quality welds with minimal distortion.  

Recently Mr. Colligan made significant contributions to a Navy Metalworking Center (NMC) project involving FSW.  Working with the Integrated Project Team (IPT), NMC designed, built, and demonstrated at CTC a low-cost, transportable FSW system that will be transitioned to production use at a Navy shipyard.  Other key CTC employees on the project included Mark Smitherman, Gabe Hostetter, Alan O'Donnell, Bob Gillingham, Ed Worek, Bruce Williams, and Jim Shevock.

The Welding Institute's (TWI) Larke-Lillicrap Award is given annually to the individual or team who has had the most influence or impact on the practical application of novel welding or joining knowledge or technology.  TWI, which is based in England, is an independent research and technology organization with experts in all aspects of materials joining and related technologies.

The Navy Metalworking Center (NMC) is one of the Centers of Excellence of the Office of Naval Research's Manufacturing Technology (ManTech) program. NMC is a national resource for the development and transition of advanced metalworking and manufacturing technologies, materials and related processes.
