Conan O'Brien's Twitter Stunt Gives Spotlight to Little-Known, but Nationally-Recognized, Children's Hunger Fund
Hoping attention lasts just long enough to help spread the message "The Rainy Season is Coming," organization asks followers to 'Please, Remember Haiti'
PACOIMA, Calif., March 9 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Conan O'Brien might have well said, "Children's Hunger Fund, your life is about to change." Even with near perfect efficiency ratings with Forbes, Ministry Watch, and Charity Navigator, Children's Hunger Fund (CHF) has remained under the radar for nearly 20 years, until now.
After O'Brien's announcement on Friday that his newfound Twitter presence would only have one follower – randomly chosen 19-year-old Sarah Killen from Michigan – a chain reaction began that shot one of America's least-known, but highest-rated, charities into the spotlight.
When Killen announced that she is getting married in September, but has no money for a wedding, one of Children's Hunger Fund's faithful donors stepped up and offered to design for her a custom wedding gown. The donor, New York-based Kelima K, asked only one thing in return: To ask people to help her favorite charity, Children's Hunger Fund.
Since then CHF Website traffic has jumped 1,200 percent, just 200 hits shy of the days following the Haiti earthquake. Though media requests and corporate gifts are pouring in to the basement where Killen lives, CHF Communications Director, Fred Martin, hopes that the attention lasts just long enough to spotlight the current needs in Haiti. "To see so many people wanting to help because of what Sarah said is simply astounding," said Martin. "Through none of our own doing, the door has been thrown wide open for us to show the ongoing needs in Haiti."
"The rainy season is coming to Haiti any day now, and the tarps and bed sheets people are living under won't protect them for much longer," Martin said. "We are asking Sarah's followers to 'Please, Remember Haiti,' by visiting www.ChildrensHungerFund.org and giving $10 toward the purchase of waterproof tents."
"Children's Hunger Fund is thankful for the attention and support. My hope is that people would see the value of what we do and help us to alleviate the suffering of children, with or without a tweet."
