Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ: BRCM), a global innovation leader in semiconductor solutions for wired and wireless communications, today announced that Taiwanese cellphone manufacturer Compal Communications (CCI) has chosen the company's BCM21664T reference platform for use in its production of Android smartphones. Utilizing one of Broadcom's turnkey designs will help CCI minimize development costs and bring new products to market more quickly. For more news, visit Broadcom's Newsroom.
The BCM21664T is optimized for the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean operating system (OS) and includes a dual-core, 1.2GHz HSPA+ processor, powerful graphics and application processing capabilities, and a full suite of wireless connectivity technologies, including GPS, Miracast and NFC. The platform also incorporates an industry-leading low power solution for 2G/3G dual-SIM dual-standby, an essential feature in emerging markets. This combined with pre-certified hardware and software components allows ODMs to speed development and delivery of 3G Android smartphones while offering consumers the advanced capabilities previously available only in higher-end devices.
"Compal Communications leads the market in supporting our OEM customers with a diverse portfolio of smartphone designs," said Shawn Tien, CCI Director of Marketing. "As we expand and scale with new models and features, we are excited to partner with Broadcom to deliver affordable smartphones that provide the enhanced functionality and superior graphics consumers have come to expect with a premium Android experience."
"Broadcom's turnkey platforms are designed to simplify and expedite production of smartphones," said Michael Civiello, Broadcom Senior Director of Marketing, Mobile Platform Solutions. "By offering a complete solution that includes a proven HSPA+ modem, pre-qualified hardware components and software applications that have been tested and accepted by global operators, Broadcom enables ODMs to develop smartphones with competitive differentiators in three months or less and at a lower cost."
The increased appetite among consumers for faster content delivery and richer applications has driven the migration from 2G feature phones to low-cost, high-functioning 3G smartphones. According to research firm Gartner, 2013 may herald the first year that smartphones make up more than half of all cellphones shipped globally. In the fourth quarter of 2012, smartphone sales rose 38.3 percent year-over-year, while feature phone sales declined 19.3 percent. Gartner projects smartphone sales to end users will approach 1 billion units by the end of this year, out of total phone sales of 1.9 billion.1
Broadcom's family of 3G and 4G LTE smartphone solutions deliver the features required for all tiers of smartphones, from affordable entry-level devices to high-performance superphones.
