Funds raised support work of non-profit children's charities and school programs
OTTAWA, Oct. 1, 2013 /CNW/ - The artistic rendition of a white sailing ship on a deep blue ocean by then seven-year-old Ezra Peters of Whitelaw (Alberta) is now on three million semi-postal stamps that will help support the work of non-profit children's charities and school programs across the country.
The new stamp issued today by Canada Post is available online and at all post offices across the country. It is the result of last year's stamp design competition that drew entries from coast-to-coast-to-coast. Budding artists 15 years old and under were invited to submit their original artwork to raise awareness of issues faced by today's youth.
The stamp carries a 10-cent surcharge that will go directly to the work of the Canada Post Community Foundation for Children. The Foundation issues grants to support the work of non-profit children's charities and school programs in every province and territory. The Foundation has just distributed $1.5 million in grants, to more than 100 organizations across Canada, the results of last year's fundraising efforts, including stamp sales.
"We are pleased that through this fundraising stamp, we are able involve talented, thoughtful young Canadians in helping other kids across the country," says Deepak Chopra, President and CEO, Canada Post. The imagery was chosen by thousands of Canadians in an online vote.
Then 7 years old, Ezra Peters of Whitelaw, Alta., created a plasticine-on-board sculpture of a white sailing ship on a deep blue ocean, with a smiling green fish leaping from the water. It is a metaphor for how children can stay on course with support and guidance.
