NEW YORK, Nov. 19, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Mutual of America announced today that the Community-Based Residency Program was named an Honorable Mention award recipient in the 2015 Community Partnership Award competition.
The program is part of CommunityHealth, which delivers comprehensive, high-quality, patient-centered health care at no cost to low-income, uninsured adults. Founded in 1993 by Dr. Serafino Garella, CommunityHealth has grown to become the largest free clinic in the United States, utilizing more than 1,500 volunteers to deliver a comprehensive range of medical, dental, health education and social services to patients. Through its innovative Community-Based Residency program, CommunityHealth is also strengthening its ties to the broader Chicago community by helping to build the pipeline of top-tier primary care physicians.
Drawing from the top teaching hospitals in the city, the program provides an opportunity for 64 internal medicine residents to gain valuable experience treating patients outside a hospital setting. These residents typically stay at CommunityHealth for three years, fulfilling the total number of clinical hours required by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
"We plan to leverage what we've learned to expand access to high-quality medical service to other clinics and communities nationwide so that no one has to go without health care," said Laura Ciresi Starr, Development Manager for CommunityHealth.
