PALO ALTO, Calif., April 6, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- In order to promote stronger product and customer focus, Communications & Power Industries (CPI) recently combined the operations of its Communications & Medical Products Division and Satcom Division, which share the company's Georgetown, Ontario, Canada facilities. The newly consolidated division, operating under the name "CPI Satcom & Medical Products Division," will remain headquartered in the existing Georgetown facilities and will continue to operate satellite locations in Palo Alto, Calif., Boalsburg, Pa., Lisle, Ill. and Adelaide, South Australia.
Before this consolidation, CPI's former Communications & Medical Products Division (CMP) and Satcom Division each served the satellite communications industry, providing uplink amplifier products in vacuum-based and solid state-based configurations, as well as other markets. The satellite communications products, although manufactured independently, were frequently marketed together under the CPI Satcom Products brand. The new Satcom & Medical Products (SMP) streamlines the former divisions' operations, particularly those focused on the satellite communications industry, enabling a greater emphasis on activities that directly benefit CPI's products and customers.
The president of CPI's former Satcom Division, Andy Tafler, has been appointed president of the SMP Division, reporting directly to Joe Caldarelli, CPI's CEO. Within the SMP Division, Mike Boyle continues to be responsible for activities related to the medical imaging industry.
"The creation of CPI Satcom & Medical Products Division will benefit our company and our customers in the communications and medical markets," said Mr. Caldarelli. "The combination of two previously independent divisions will produce a more focused organization that is better able to leverage CPI's amplifier and power generation technology in order to strengthen and grow CPI's position in the satellite communications and medical imaging industries."
Additionally, Tony Russell, who was previously the vice president of microwave operations within the former CMP Division, has been appointed president of CPI's ASC Signal Division, which designs and builds advanced satellite communications, radar and high-frequency antennas and controllers. Mr. Russell has held a number of managerial positions at CPI, most recently managing the worldwide operations, engineering, and research and development functions for the microwave business of the former CMP Division, and has been instrumental in growing CPI's solid-state communications amplifier business over the past several years. He replaces Keith Buckley, who has left CPI.
