CINCINNATI, Oct. 26, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- CommuniCare, one of the nation's largest privately owned skilled nursing companies, will host educational programs, fundraisers and musical performances to mark the second annual Purple With Purpose Day on Friday, October 27. The day is designed to help build awareness and inspire advocacy around Alzheimer's Disease and dementia-related diagnoses. The events also kick off the start of Alzheimer's Awareness month in November.
Alzheimer's and dementia-related diagnoses impose huge economic and emotional burdens on society—burdens that continue to grow as Americans live longer lives.
Today, 5.5 million Americans, or one in 10 Americans ages 65 or older, live with Alzheimer's. Every 66 seconds, someone in the U.S. develops Alzheimer's, resulting in nearly half a million new cases this year; by 2050, that figure is expected to increase to every 33 seconds. Alzheimer's takes a huge economic toll on society, with direct costs of more than $259 billion. Nearly one in every five Medicare dollars is spent on people with Alzheimer's.
CommuniCare centers see firsthand the struggle to remember and the fight to never forget.
CommuniCare keeps memories alive through special programs and their Connections Units, which are dedicated to serving Alzheimer's and dementia patients. Connections memory care units are available at the following locations:
Each Connections Unit serves the Alzheimer's and dementia population with purpose and dignity. Expertly trained team members offer therapeutic recreation, leisure activities and grooming skills to help each resident retain a sense of connection and independence. Some units even have Snoezelen Rooms, specially designed spaces that offer soothing sound, touch and light to calm residents.
"Purple with a Purpose, now in its second year, is CommuniCare's way of demonstrating our commitment to residents and families impacted by Alzheimer's Disease and other dementia diagnoses," said Isaac Rosedale, Executive Vice President of CommuniCare. "Our Connections Units are at the forefront of caring for these residents with dignity and providing a sense of connection that might otherwise be missing from their lives."
All 73 of CommuniCare's healthcare and rehabilitation centers will participate in the Longest Connection contest to build the longest memory link with personal memories written on each one. Links will sell for $1 at CommuniCare's centers and the funds raised will go to the Alzheimer's Association.
Each property will also offer professional and community education events as well as internal events for residents, families and employees to promote the advocacy, support and awareness of Alzheimer's and related dementia diagnoses.
