Commonwealth Libraries Celebrates National Preservation Week
HARRISBURG, Pa., May 7 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Education Secretary Gerald L. Zahorchak today encouraged citizens to visit the state and local libraries in celebration of the first National Preservation Week, May 9-15, 2010.
Preservation Week's purpose is to raise awareness of libraries' role in connecting the general public to preservation information and expertise. Recognizing the critical role libraries play in preservation, Commonwealth Libraries joins the celebration with the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services, a division of the American Library Association.
"The libraries in our state preserve our history, holding copies of Editions of Poor Richard's Almanac published by Benjamin Franklin, Imprints from the Ephrata Cloister, the first American Bible and much more," Zahorchak said. "All Pennsylvania citizens should take an opportunity to visit their libraries to share in a piece of history and also encourage preservation of our rich heritage so we are able to pass it on for many more generations."
The State Library in Harrisburg will be open for visitors during Preservation Week. Guided Tours of the Rare Collections Library Reading Room, as well as the other reading rooms, will be given between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., May 10-14. To schedule a tour, please call 717-783-5969.
