Commonwealth and OpenText Announce New Web Initiative
WATERLOO, ON, May 3 /PRNewswire/ - OpenText™ (NASDAQ: OTEX, TSX: OTC) and the Commonwealth Secretariat today announced an agreement to work together on creating Commonwealth Connects , an innovative Internet gateway or portal designed to connect people, organizations and governments across the Commonwealth. Using the latest OpenText technology, the gateway will allow members of the Commonwealth community to share information, network, and collaborate online.
"Commonwealth countries are diverse, home to two billion people and span six continents, so the use of modern Web technologies to connect people and strengthen cooperation across the entire community is vitally important," said Commonwealth Secretary General, Kamalesh Sharma. "We are working with OpenText to provide a Web platform that will build a stronger Commonwealth in the 21st century and sustain its work far into the future. Signing this agreement is just the first step."
Open Text and the Secretariat have also agreed to help speed technology adoption in member countries of the Commonwealth by jointly supporting the development of effective national strategies for information and communication technology (ICT) adoption and use.
"The rate of technology development and adoption around the world is happening at an incredible pace. This is a unique and innovative strategy by the Commonwealth to work in a collaborative fashion with member countries and Commonwealth agencies," said Tom Jenkins, Executive Chairman and Chief Strategy Officer at OpenText. "We're excited to be the chosen partner to work with the Commonwealth. Our work with the G-20, multiple national governments and on Canada 3.0, which is dedicated to defining a digital strategy for Canada, makes us a good match for this project."
OpenText, a leader in providing content management, social collaboration and digital media software to national, regional and local governments around the world, has extensive experience in helping government organizations develop digital strategies to serve key stakeholders, including citizens.
Development work on the Commonwealth Connects portal is underway and scheduled for completion later this year in time for its formal launch at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Perth, Australia in October.
