Committee for Responsible Foreign Policy Hosts Event Alongside Senators Lee and Sanders to Highlight Tragedies in Yemen

WASHINGTON, March 8, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Last night the Committee for Responsible Foreign Policy (CRFP) hosted an event at the U.S. Senate to display some of Yemen's best photojournalists while discussing issues in the region.

After months of advocacy, CRFP recently saw one of its lead bipartisan policy proposals introduced by Senator Bernie Sanders and Senator Mike Lee, who were on hand at last night's event. Specifically, S.J.Res.54 is a joint resolution aimed at directing the United States Military from hostilities in the Republic of Yemen if these engagements were not explicitly authorized by Congress.

A release from Senator Sanders upon introduction of this legislation highlighted that Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution states that "Congress shall have power to... declare war." Unfortunately, the ongoing hostilities in Yemen that see one child die every 10 minutes were never authorized by Congress.

CRFP has worked tirelessly over the months by calling on Congress to utilize the War Powers Act and reign in a blatant abuse of power by the Executive branch.

Wednesday's events continued that advocacy with support and remarks from Senators Lee and Sanders while also featuring award-winning journalist Iona Craig, who commented on the atrocities in Yemen and the importance of S.J.Res.54.

As it stands, this joint resolution must receive a vote on or before March 9, per Senate rules.

The Committee for Responsible Foreign Policy believes that the United States should pursue a realistic and restrained foreign policy and that Congress should exercise their Constitutional duty to direct military actions.
