Committee For Change: City Silent on Walter Burnett Jr.'s Illegal Posting of Campaign Signs

CHICAGO, Feb. 21, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The campaign for Walter Burnett, Jr. has resorted to questionable tactics to promote their campaign. The incumbent Alderman is sidestepping city ordinances by posting campaign signs on lampposts in the Ward. Burnett's signs are attached to traffic lights, over city bridges, and other public improvements in clear violation of ordinance.

At the same time, campaign posters for the challengers that were hung legally next to signs for mayoral candidates have been torn down. Tom Courtney, 27th Ward Alderman candidate, reported that over 1000 campaign signs had been torn down and destroyed including ones placed inside storefronts, businesses, and in the yards of private residences.

Candidate for 27th Ward, GeVonna Fassett, has also had issues with the city. For two days the trash at her home was not picked up. When her brother contacted Linda Delgado, Streets and Sanitation Supervisor for the 27th Ward, he was informed that they do not pick up trash on private property, a rule that was recently implemented. However, since the issue was posted on the Committee for Change blog, trash pickup from her private property resumed.

The Committee for Change attempted to contact Linda Delgado, an Alderman Burnett appointee, about the campaign signs in violation of city ordinance. On both occasions the issue was ignored by the Streets and Sanitation Supervisor.

"It's a joke," said Courtney. "We were contacted by Delgado for several yard signs in the public way on Randolph. We were threatened with immediate court proceedings, $100 for a single sign. Burnett's signs are actually attached to traffic signals, likely dangerous. Warnings and court actions must be for me."

GeVonna Fassett added, "Burnett can remove my signs, but they can't remove my name from the ballot."
