Commissioner Doak to Attend Town Hall Meeting about Earthquake Swarms
OKLAHOMA CITY, June 17, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner John D. Doak has announced plans to attend a town hall meeting about the recent earthquake swarms in central Oklahoma.
"This is a very important issue," said Doak. "I commend Rep. Moore and Rep. Murphey for putting this together and I was happy to accept their invitation to take part. During the meeting, my staff and I will be happy to answer any questions about earthquake insurance, something I've been urging Oklahomans to consider since 2011."
State representatives Lewis Moore, R-Arcadia, and Jason Murphey, R-Guthrie, will host the town hall meeting, scheduled for 7 p.m. on June 26 at the Waterloo Road Baptist Church, 3100 E. Waterloo Road, Edmond.
The meeting will feature presentations from the Oklahoma Corporation Commission and the Oklahoma Geological Survey. Residents will also be able to ask questions.
"These earthquakes aren't going away," said Doak. "We don't know when the next 'big one' will happen. That's why homeowners should protect themselves now."
Earthquake policies vary in cost depending on multiple factors, including the desired level of coverage and deductible amount. Insurers also determine the premiums based on the property location, age and construction of the home and the cost to rebuild. Earthquake insurance covers repairs to the property and may cover other structures not attached to the house, like a garage. It also insures personal property against damage from an earthquake and covers debris removal costs.
