LOS ANGELES, April 25, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Jenner & Block is pleased to announce today that Todd C. Toral, an accomplished commercial litigator with significant experience handling complex litigation and cross-border matters, has joined the firm as a partner in its Los Angeles office. Mr. Toral will be a member of the firm's Complex Commercial Litigation Practice.
"Todd's deep trial and litigation experience, combined with his dedication to pro bono work, make him a great fit for Jenner & Block," said Terrence J. Truax, the firm's managing partner. "His commitment to professional excellence and public service mirror the core values that distinguish us as a firm."
Mr. Toral focuses his practice on matters involving investment funds, domestic and foreign federal tax disputes, financial services, insurance, and contract claims. He also handles claims for violations of multiple state and federal schemes, including disputes arising out of the California Unfair Competition Law, Lanham Act, and Securities Exchange Act of 1934 (Rule 10b-5).
He serves as restructuring and litigation counsel to national and international banks, insurance holding companies, and private equity funds concerning various credit and equity investment vehicles. Mr. Toral has more than a decade of first-chair trial experience in high-profile tax shelter disputes with the California Franchise Tax Board, the Internal Revenue Service, and promoters of tax-advantaged products involving complex financial derivatives and hedge transactions, European put/call options, and OID bonds. He has also handled tax and financial services controversies for various financial institutions and private equity funds throughout the United States and abroad.
Mr. Toral joins the firm from DLA Piper, where he was chair of cross-border litigation for the Americas. Working in private practice since 1998, Mr. Toral previously served for eight years in the US Marine Corps as an infantry officer, achieving the rank of captain.
"Todd's varied practice and experience add excellent resources for our clients in the banking, insurance and finance industries, whose businesses require the sophisticated litigation counsel he provides," said Craig C. Martin, chair of Jenner & Block's Litigation Department. "His joining in our Los Angeles office also continues to build upon our strong and growing litigation presence across the United States and overseas."
Rick Richmond, the managing partner and a co-founder of the Los Angeles office, said that Mr. Toral's addition continues the firm's West Coast growth. The office began with just two lawyers in 2009 and has more than 50 today. "Our office has quickly become known for its success in handling the most complex litigation and Todd's addition strengthens our ability to provide this level of service," Mr. Richmond said.
Mr. Toral is a co-chair of the Privacy and Information Security Subcommittee of the ABA Section of Litigation Consumer Litigation Committee. A board member of Bet Tzedek and Crystal Stairs, Inc., he maintains an active pro bono practice. He has served as an appellate panelist for the Veterans Consortium Pro Bono Program and has represented the American Legion and Swords to Plowshares, which both serve the needs of veterans, in litigation against the city and county of San Francisco. He currently represents the International Rescue Committee on Syrian refugee issues.
"Jenner & Block is a top-tier trial firm whose lawyers provide the highest levels of excellence in the practice of law and public service. I am excited to be part of this tradition," said Mr. Toral. "I look forward to working with my new colleagues to further expand the firm's footprint in Los Angeles and beyond."
Mr. Toral earned his J.D. from the University of San Francisco School of Law, where he was an editor for the Maritime Law Journal, and his LL.M in Tax from the New York University School of Law.
