Comic Novel Tackles Taboo Topic
Black Comedy of Manners Revolves Around Herpes
COCONUT CREEK, Fla., March 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Award-winning journalist Barbara Dinerman has published "H": A Novel, a witty and irreverent novel about genital herpes, office politics, and one woman's search for her identity. Set in Fort Lauderdale, the story pokes fun at the frenetic real-estate boom and its promoters.
After discovering that she has been infected with this marauding virus, Joan Halprin, a single woman in her mid-thirties, feels untouchable. She spent her youth enjoying worldly experiences in New York and Paris, but now it's time to start a serious career as a copywriter for a Florida advertising agency.
Despite the presence of her family in nearby Delray Beach, Joan feels isolated with her "H" problem -- even though one in four women, and one in five men, has the sexually transmitted virus.
As her career takes off, Joan falls for Nate, a client's handsome son. The moment she feared has arrived. How can she find the courage to tell him about her membership in this dubious club? Her irascible, rotund boss, Sid, isn't helping her regain self-esteem. But with her irrepressible humor, Joan concocts a bold creative solution. Too bold, perhaps?
"H": A Novel (published by iUniverse) deals with a variety of contemporary issues, from family to job to personal satisfaction and acceptance. The novel received both the "Editor's Choice" and "Publisher's Choice" designations from iUniverse.
Joyce Sweeney, author of The Guardian and more than a dozen other novels, says, "This book is really fun! A bit of 'The Office,' a little bit of 'Sex in the City,' and a whole lot of 'Miami Vice.' Barbara Dinerman has captured the flavor of corporate politics and sexual politics in this very funny saga of a contemporary woman looking for love and finding … well, you'll see."
