ComEd Sends Underground Specialists to Assist Outage Restoration in New York

CHICAGO, Nov. 1, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- ComEd yesterday deployed a team of 48 of its top underground specialists to New York to assist specifically with the repair of underground vaults that power the city's skyscrapers.

"ComEd has a unique in-house skill set for repairing these underground electrical systems which are typically only found in densely built urban environments, like Chicago or New York," said Terence Donnelly, executive vice president and chief operating officer, ComEd. "Consolidated Edison in New York requested our help in restoring power to their customers. We were glad to be able to send this expert team to assist."

New York City's vaults were flooded as a result of Hurricane Sandy. The salt water that poured into the vaults can cause extensive damage and presents unique challenges for power restoration.

"We are very fortunate to have experienced and dedicated employees who day in and day out manage the complex electrical grid that powers Chicago," said Donnelly. "Our employees are eager to use that experience to help the customers in New York."

This new deployment comes in addition to the more than 900 ComEd and contractor personnel that the utility sent to support the power restoration efforts in Philadelphia and Baltimore, which were both in the direct path of Hurricane Sandy.

"With more than 7 million people facing power outages on the East Coast, we think it's important to provide as much assistance as we can," said Donnelly. "The specialists that we are sending to New York City will be able to use their expertise to ensure that the businesses and residents affected by outages are restored as quickly and as safely as possible."
