"Comcast Corporation continues to demonstrate its leadership and commitment to improving lives," said Brian Gallagher, United Way Worldwide president and CEO. "The company and its employees are investing in communities nationwide through generous giving, hundreds of thousands of volunteer hours and a focused commitment to providing internet access and digital literacy training."
Comcast Corporation invested more than $334 million in programs and partnerships in 39 states and Washington, D.C. in 2012, including $9.5 million of cash and in-kind support to United Way partners around the country, with $2.5 million in value of in-kind support airing public service announcements.
Last year, Comcast Corporation employees volunteered more than 454,000 hours, which was matched with $1.5 million in Comcast Foundation grants for nonprofits. Since 2001, more than 435,000 employees have volunteered more than 2.6 million hours of service on Comcast Cares Day.
One of Comcast Corporation's signature programs is Internet Essentials, the nation's largest and most comprehensive broadband adoption program, which provides low-cost Internet access, computers and free digital literacy training to struggling families to help close the digital divide. More than 60 United Ways across the country support this program.
"We are extremely proud to be recognized by United Way with Summit Awards," said David L. Cohen, Executive Vice President, Comcast Corporation. "Giving back to the communities we serve has been an important part of Comcast's culture since our founding 50 years ago, and United Way has been an invaluable partner for decades. We hope that we have inspired positive change and helped in some way to motivate the next generation of leaders to continue to champion the importance of volunteerism."
United Way presented awards to Comcast Corporation, 3M, Microsoft Corporation, Bank of America, General Motors, Wells Fargo and The Mosaic Company.
