Comcast Awards $32,000 in Scholarships to 23 New Hampshire Students
Graduating High School Seniors Recognized for Academic Achievement and Community Service
CONCORD, N.H., June 12, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The Comcast Foundation, founded in 1999 to provide charitable support to its local communities and to empower and enrich lives, today announced the 2012 recipients of its annual Leaders and Achievers® Scholarship Program. The program, one of the Comcast Foundation's signature community investment programs, recognizes students' leadership skills, academic achievement and commitment to community service.
New Hampshire Governor John Lynch, who assisted Comcast's Mark Reilly in awarding the scholarships at the State House earlier today, praised good corporate citizens like Comcast. Twenty-two of the 2012 New Hampshire Leaders and Achievers recipients received $1,000 scholarships and one lucky student was awarded a $10,000 Comcast Founders Scholarship – instituted in honor of Ralph J. Roberts, Founder and Chairman Emeritus of Comcast Corporation – for a total of $32,000 awarded in New Hampshire this year.
"These are some very special young people who have already demonstrated they have the skills and the desire to be future leaders in our state. These young people have excelled in the classroom, but have also accomplished so much outside of the classroom as well. All are well-rounded individuals and role models for their peers and for all of us," Gov. John Lynch said. "I want to thank Comcast for recognizing the achievements of these future leaders and providing financial help through these scholarships."
"Each year, we are excited to award Leaders and Achievers scholarships to talented and deserving students in New Hampshire who demonstrate leadership in school activities and reflect a strong commitment to community service," said Mark Reilly, Senior Vice President of Government Affairs for Comcast's Northeast Division, which includes New Hampshire. "We are proud to recognize the success and potential of such outstanding student leaders, all of whom are preparing for the next step in their educational careers."
The Comcast Leaders and Achievers® Scholarship Program provides one-time $1,000 scholarships to students who strive to achieve their potential, who are catalysts for positive change in their communities, who are involved in their schools, and who serve as models for their fellow students. The philosophy behind the program is to give young people every opportunity to be prepared for the future, to engage youth in their communities, and to demonstrate the importance of civic involvement, and the value placed on civic involvement by the business community.
Local winners throughout New Hampshire have participated in a wide variety of community service activities, such as volunteering at Invisible Children Charity, Norris Cotton Cancer Center, Make-A-Wish Foundation and City Year New Hampshire.
Since the program's inception there have been over 17,000 scholarship winners totaling more than $17.4 million. A list of the scholarship recipients in New Hampshire is detailed below.
