Comcast Awards $111,000 in Scholarships to 102 Massachusetts Students
Graduating High School Seniors Recognized for Academic Achievement and Community Service
BOSTON, June 19, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The Comcast Foundation, founded in 1999 to provide charitable support to its local communities and to empower and enrich lives, today announced the 2012 recipients of its annual Leaders and Achievers® Scholarship Program. The program, one of the Comcast Foundation's signature community investment programs, recognizes students' leadership skills, academic achievement and commitment to community service.
Massachusetts Lieutenant Governor Timothy P. Murray, who assisted Comcast's Steve Hackley in awarding the scholarships at the State House earlier today, praised good corporate citizens like Comcast. 101 of the 2012 Massachusetts Leaders and Achievers recipients received $1,000 scholarships and one lucky student was awarded a $10,000 Comcast Founders Scholarship – instituted in honor of Ralph J. Roberts, Founder and Chairman Emeritus of Comcast Corporation – for a total of $111,000 awarded in Massachusetts this year.
"Corporate citizens like Comcast invest in our communities to build a stronger future for our Commonwealth," said Lieutenant Governor Murray. "Thanks to Comcast's philanthropic scholarship program, the awards announced today will support the education for student leaders and develop another generation of scholars in our communities."
"Each year, we are excited to award Leaders and Achievers scholarships to talented and deserving students in Massachusetts who demonstrate leadership in school activities and reflect a strong commitment to community service," said Steve Hackley, Senior Vice President for Comcast's Greater Boston Region. "We are proud to recognize the success and potential of such outstanding student leaders, all of whom are preparing for the next step in their educational careers."
The Comcast Leaders and Achievers® Scholarship Program provides one-time $1,000 scholarships to students who strive to achieve their potential, who are catalysts for positive change in their communities, who are involved in their schools, and who serve as models for their fellow students. The philosophy behind the program is to give young people every opportunity to be prepared for the future, to engage youth in their communities, and to demonstrate the importance of civic involvement, and the value placed on civic involvement by the business community.
Local winners throughout Massachusetts have participated in a wide variety of community service activities, such as mentoring and coaching younger students, volunteering at hospitals and participating in local blood, food and clothing drives.
Since the program's inception there have been over 17,000 scholarship winners totaling more than $17.4 million. A list of the scholarship recipients in New Hampshire is detailed below.
