GLENVIEW, Ill., April 7, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- April is National Cancer Control Month. Combined Insurance, a leading provider of individual supplemental accident, disability, health, and life insurance products, and a Chubb company, is encouraging consumers to take time out this month to assess whether they have the right amount of insurance to protect themselves if they or a family member were afflicted with cancer.
The ability for consumers to pay for cancer treatment has become increasingly difficult over the past two decades. According to the Mayo Clinic, annual drug treatments cost less than $10,000 for an average patient before the year 2000, and by 2012 that figure jumped to more than $100,000.
Major medical insurance helps to cover some of the costs of cancer treatment, but on top of paying for medicine and doctor visits, patients still have to pay for their regular living expenses—such as mortgage, car payments, etc. These costs are not covered by typical major medical insurance, and many people lack cancer insurance coverage that can help pay for the non-medical costs associated with this disease.
"Cancer can strike anyone at any time, regardless of lifestyle," says Jan Martin, Vice President, Product Innovation at Combined Insurance. "It's not something that anyone wants to think about, but the reality is that nearly 40 percent of men and women will be diagnosed with some form of cancer at some point during their lifetime [according to the National Cancer Institute]."
Martin says that National Cancer Control Month is a good time for consumers to consider protecting themselves and their families with supplemental cancer insurance. Before deciding, Martin says individuals should ask themselves, if they had cancer, would they be able to pay for:
- Deductibles and co-payments that major medical insurance doesn't cover
- Regular living expenses such as mortgage, car payments, utilities, and food
- Transportation expenses involved with treatment
- Lodging and meals away from home for themselves and their family
- Domestic help, such as child care, meals, laundry, and yard work
If an individual would need help paying for these expenses, Martin says they should consider supplemental cancer insurance coverage. In addition to covering some of the costs associated with treatment, there are other potential benefits of a supplemental cancer policy, depending on the policy and the provider.
Combined Insurance's Cancer Protector insurance offers the insured:
- Cash benefits paid directly to the insured – in addition to other private insurance
- Customizable protection to provide the level of coverage that best meets their needs
- Benefits that will not decrease, regardless of your age
