Columbia University Professor Awarded the Seymour Diamond, MD Lectureship

CHICAGO, Feb. 10, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The National Headache Foundation is pleased to announce that Melodie Winawer, M.D., M.S., is the recipient of the 2014 Seymour Diamond, M.D. Lectureship. Doctor Winawer is an Associate Professor of Neurology at Columbia University. Currently, she is involved in clinical, education, and research activities at the Columbia University Medical Center and Harlem Hospital in New York City. In addition to her work in neurology, she received an M.S. in Epidemiology from the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University. For the past 15 years, her research has focused on epilepsy and genetic epidemiology.

The lectureship was established in 2005 to honor the Executive Chairman and Founder of the National Headache Foundation – Seymour Diamond, M.D. The award recognizes the most significant paper in headache which was published during the past year.

The lecture will be presented on Friday, February 14, 2014, at the course, The 27^th Annual Practicing Physician's Approach to the Difficult Headache Patient, which is sponsored by the Diamond Headache Clinic Research & Educational Foundation, and is held at the Island Hotel, Newport Beach, California. Doctor Winawer's lecture, "Evidence for a Shared Genetic Susceptibility to Migraine and Epilepsy," is based on the article of the same title which appeared in the journal, Epilepsia, Volume 54, 2013. Her coauthors were Robert Connors and the investigators of the Epilepsy Phenome/Genome Project (EPGP).
