"Everyone needs that care and comfort in trying times when kids are sick. I am so proud to be a part of The Children's Hospital at Scott & White," said McCoy. "It's real simple, it's all about the kids. I love helping children and I want to make as much of a difference in their lives as I can."
The former Texas Longhorn Football star presented patients and hospital administrators with his donation at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium Saturday evening, on the same field he became a University of Texas football legend and set the record for most wins by a Division-I college quarterback. Prior to the check presentation, the University of Texas retired McCoy's jersey, honoring his accomplishments on and off the field.
Throughout his athletic career, McCoy has been an inspiration to kids and a strong children's advocate. He now acts as advocate for Scott & White's fundraising campaign to create the new children's hospital.
"Colt doesn't just talk about helping children and their families in fighting illness and disease, he takes action," said John Boyd, M.D., CEO and chief medical officer to The Children's Hospital at Scott & White. "We couldn't be more honored to partner with someone of Colt's stature who also has compassion for children and tenacity for achieving greatness. That is what it takes to make this hospital a reality."
McCoy knows firsthand the life-saving and life-improving care children's hospitals provide surrounding communities and families. When his younger brother suffered a rare skin condition as a child, the McCoy family would regularly travel hours together to the nearest pediatric hospital for treatment.
"My brother was able to overcome his illness through the support of our family and our access to a hospital that provided outstanding care," said McCoy. "I want to be part of bringing more of that kind of care to children."
"The Children's Hospital at Scott & White is critical to our region's future, that's why we're so grateful for Colt's commitment to helping us reach the fundraising goal line," said Nancy Birdwell, chief development officer for Scott & White. "Today, I want to thank Colt for leading by example with his generous donation to this project."
The renovation of King's Daughters Hospital is expected to take 12 months with the new Children's Hospital at Scott & White opening sometime in fall 2011.
