College stores are so much more than a place to buy textbooks. Many offer a variety of merchandise and products including, clothing, school supplies, leisure reading, dorm materials, exercise equipment, food, and drinks.
College stores often provide a variety of services. Besides being the go-to guru of textbooks, many stores provide other services such as travel agent, recycling center, dry cleaner, computer repair, health services, and shipping.
"These days, it seems students are busier than ever as they have to balance a demanding schedule consisting of school, work, clubs, and more," said Charles Schmidt, National Association of College Stores (NACS) director of public relations. "By offering a variety of products and services, the college stores can save students time and money. Instead of having to drive to the post office and then to a local store for groceries, students can walk between classes to their college store and get everything they need without ever leaving campus."
Students looking for entertainment can also turn to the college stores. Stores are known to host a variety of programs from book signings to yoga sessions and concert series. Many stores also have lounge areas for students to grab a cup of coffee, study, or meet up with friends.
"Our ultimate goal is to be a hub for students to go to whether they need help finding a book or just want something fun to do," said Schmidt. "As the needs and wants of students change, so will stores' products and services."
