Scheduled this year for Oct. 4, National Student Day is sponsored by the National Association of College Stores (NACS). It is a day dedicated to celebrating and promoting social responsibility by college students.
On Oct. 4, college stores throughout the United States and Canada will host an array of events in their stores to celebrate and promote social responsibility. These events will consist of giveaways, parties, contests, and more. So far, more than 1,500 college stores have registered to participate. They include institutionally owned stores and those run for institutions of higher education by Barnes & Noble College Booksellers, Follett Higher Education Group, and Nebraska Book Co.
STUDENTS CAN WIN PRIZES
NACS also is sponsoring a nationwide contest that will reward students who demonstrate their volunteerism. Beginning Aug. 15, 2012, Students can submit their story or video of social responsibility here. Stories will be voted on by their peers; the three most popular submissions will win scholarships and seven random submissions will win iPads.
"For years, college students have been volunteering across their campus community and beyond," said NACS Director of Public Relations, Charles Schmidt. "From cleaning up a local park to serving as a Big Brother or Big Sister, they have taken time out of their hectic schedules to perform selfless acts without seeking recognition. We felt it was about time to applaud these students for their efforts, which is why we came up with National Student Day."
The logo for National Student Day was selected by a panel of 18,000 college students from more than 1,100 campuses across North America. "Since the day is about the students, we wanted to get them involved in the creation of the day," said Schmidt. "We also feel the tagline 'Study, Serve, Celebrate' very appropriately captures the essence of the day."
