College Scholarships Awarded to Sixth Annual DemandTec Retail Challenge Semi-Finalists
Winning student teams advance to Grand Championship round in New York City to compete for $10,000 prize
SAN MATEO, Calif., Dec. 5, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- DemandTec, Inc. (NASDAQ: DMAN), the collaborative analytics cloud for retailers and consumer products companies, today announced the winning teams advancing to the Grand Championship round for the DemandTec Retail Challenge, a math scholarship competition.
The sixth annual DemandTec Retail Challenge began with 15 regional competitions across the United States, including the San Francisco Bay Area (CA), Warrenville (IL), Minneapolis & Duluth (MN), Dallas (TX), Osceola (WI); Columbus (OH), Pittsburgh (PA), Shrewsbury (MA), Manhattan (NY), Scotch Plains (NJ), and Syracuse (NY).
The 15 regional winning teams each won scholarships toward the college of their choice and competed in the semi-final round on December 2, 2011. Based on a rank order quantitative score, five of the 15 semi-finalist teams will advance to the Grand Championship round, sponsored by Best Buy, at the NASDAQ OMX Stock Market in New York City on January 17, 2012. The finalist teams will compete for an additional $10,000 college scholarship and the opportunity to ring the NASDAQ closing bell later that day.

The five semi-final round winning teams advancing to the Grand Championship include Chantel Acosta and Raify Hidalgo from Central Park East High School (NY), Elliot Tan and Kunal Sangani from Fayetteville-Manlius High School (NY), Greg Grabarek and Peter Ericksen from Wheaton-Warrenville South High School (IL), Charles Du and Duncan Hurrelbrink from Minnetonka High School (MN), and Agnes Wang and Alyssa Hartje from Mountain View High School (CA).
The 2011 DemandTec Retail Challenge drew 520 high school seniors divided into 260 two-person teams, an increase of more than 50% in student participation from 2010. Upon the conclusion of this year's DemandTec Retail Challenge, close to $400,000 in college scholarship money will have been awarded since its inception, including more than $120,000 this year alone.

The competition includes an online business simulation where students step into the shoes of pricing analysts at a major retailer, choosing prices and promotional activity on a week-by-week basis to optimize the retailer's profit from those products. Students are encouraged to use statistical modeling techniques, including regression and affinity analyses, to achieve the highest profit. At the conclusion of the competition, participants present their results and strategies to a panel of industry experts who evaluate operational results, teamwork, and presentation techniques.
