College Participates in National Campus Sustainability Day Initiative

BOSTON, Nov. 22, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Bunker Hill Community College recently participated in National Campus Sustainability Day 2010. This event, held at the Charlestown campus on October 21, 2010, was organized by the College's student Sustainability Club. The College's Director of Sustainability, Paul Wolff, provided guidance for the day's activities.

The aim of the daylong event was to promote awareness of how lifestyle choices impact the carbon footprint of each and every individual. Members of the College's Sustainability Club created a program titled, "What's Your Carbon Footprint?" which encouraged students, faculty and staff to take an ecological footprint quiz to determine their impact on the environment.

Led by Sustainability Club Co-presidents Elsa John and Brian Alves, hundreds of students – wearing t-shirts with a green footprint – participated in the program, which, in addition to the quiz, included various culinary offerings and live disc jockeys who alternated hip-hop music with environmental messages such as tips about energy conservation or strategies for reducing waste on campus.

"We wanted to come up with a way to reach as many people as possible. I know that students like music and food, so we started with that," said club Co-president John. "But to get the food, students had to take the ecological quiz." Co-president Alves said that they plan to have similar events in the future, in collaboration with other student clubs on campus.

Bunker Hill Community College is the largest community college in Massachusetts. The College enrolls more than 12,200 students on two campuses and at four satellite locations. BHCC is one of the most diverse institutions of higher education in Massachusetts. Six in ten students are people of color and more than half of BHCC's students are women. The College also enrolls more than 700 international students who come from more than 95 countries and speak 75 different languages.
