Once completely dependent on agriculture, especially cotton, Alabama entered the 20th century considerably behind other states, even its fellow Southern states, due to the economic isolation, educational gap, and restrictive laws. But the arrival of NASA's Marshall Space Flight center, and all of the employment and educational opportunities that came with being the center of the national space program, gave Alabama a new lease on life, and the freedoms that came with the Civil Rights Movement have steadily opened Alabama up to the possibility of growth and change. Today, with a strong foundation in STEM and professions set by institutions like Auburn University and Tuskegee University, Alabama is showing the 21st century what the people of the Yellowhammer State can do.
Alabama's higher education system, as Managing Editor Carrie Sealey-Morris explains, "dates back to the first days of Alabama's statehood, when the University of Alabama was established in 1820," and though the first years of UA's existence was taken up with preparing a population with enough education for college, and with building the infrastructure for a university, "'Bama grew over the course of the 19th century to become the heart of research and learning in the state, from law and business to medicine and nursing." The University of Alabama has driven growth in the 21st century with its support for research, as have "Auburn University, Tuskegee University, and Alabama A&M University, founded as Alabama's land-grant institutions (for white and black students, respectively) before building on that foundation to become national leaders in STEM fields like engineering, biology, and computing." With top-notch research institutions and a strong class of liberal arts colleges to educate a community of leaders and scholars, "Alabama's higher education system is working to bring Alabama's high school graduates, working adults, and every other prospective student the education and training they need to take on the modern workforce."
College Consensus is a new approach to college rankings. We combine the latest results from the most respected college ranking systems with thousands of real student review scores from around the web to produce an aggregate College Consensus rating for each school.
