Safety for all students is fast becoming one of the most important factors when deciding what school to attend. Families are concerned about their children's safety both on- and off-campus, creating a need for a ranking of this kind.
"Though the idea of safety can be relative—for one it may mean they feel welcome no matter how they identify and for another it may mean a space free of alcohol and drugs—a safe campus can generally be understood as one with low crime incidents, robust security, protection for its female and minority students, and a sense of inclusion," Christian Amondson, Managing Editor of College Choice, said of the ranking.
College Choice curated its 2016 ranking for Safest Colleges and Universities by using specific data that has been collected using the U.S. Department of Education, U.S. News and World Report, and The National Center for Education Statistics. Data that was used to rank schools include the general safety grade, the women's safety grade, the anti-discrimination grade, and the party scene grade.
The College Choice 2016 ranking for Safest Colleges and Universities finds the Baptist College of Florida in the top spot. The top three are rounded out by Penn State Lehigh Valley and Northwest Florida State College.
