From the rugged peaks of the Rocky Mountains, to the arid deserts of the Southwest, the mountain zone of the United States presents spectacular views and places. It is also home to a wide array of cultures and lifestyles, visible in the diversity of colleges in this region. There are large research universities and small liberal arts schools, religious and secular, public and private.
"College Choice has been ranking the best colleges in every state, in order to help local residents—or prospective residents—figure out what their options are in higher education," Christian Amondson, Managing Editor of College Choice, said of the ranking. "Big national rankings tend to obscure smaller gems, and those gems show up in these five mountain-zone rankings in a big way."
College Choice developed its lists by looking at traditional metrics of institutional excellence such as student-to-faculty ratio, incoming student test scores, and regional accreditation according to data from the National Center for Education Statistics and U.S. News & World Report. College Choice also incorporated data on return on investment, or the difference between tuition costs and expected early career salary, found on Payscale.
