The northeastern states of New Hampshire and Vermont have long histories of higher education. In general, the Northeast can boast some of the oldest and most distinguished colleges in the country, and the institutions there range from Ivy League, to top-tier liberal arts, to impressive research universities, as well as other public and private schools that have a lot to offer undergraduate as well as graduate students.
"Both Vermont and New Hampshire are quite small, and most Americans probably don't have too much familiarity with them," Christian Amondson, Managing Editor of College Choice, said of the ranking. "But prospective students should not mistake their lack of familiarity for an excuse not to investigate what those states have to offer. They might find their dream school there."
College Choice developed its lists by looking at academic quality, institutional reputation, regional accreditation, along with return on investment—the differential between tuition costs and average early career earnings. Data comes from US News & World Report, the National Center for Education Statistics, and Payscale.
