Washington State is known for its beauty, entrepreneurship, technology, and agriculture. The Evergreen State is large and Washington was ranked eighth among U.S. states in population growth according to an estimate for 2015 by the U.S. Census Bureau. Livability is also among the highest in the nation, a reason the Pacific Northwest is a place many people are moving to. The state also boasts some of the best institutions of higher learning in the country.
The economic climate of the state where a student goes to college is important. In fact, with the cost of college so high, the job market and expected return is often among the top factors for choosing the right college. Washington's economic outlook is encouraging, especially given the bevy of successful corporations with offices there, such as Microsoft, Google, Starbucks, Amazon, and Alaska Airlines.
"With more than 40 institutions of higher education, the state of Washington is a great place for in-state and out-of-state students," Christian Amondson, Managing Editor of College Choice, said of the ranking. "No matter your academic or professional interests, you'll be sure to find some amazing opportunities."
College Choice developed its list by looking at three central factors: academic quality, student body diversity, and return on investment. Each factor is itself comprised of numerous data points such as test scores of entering freshmen and student-to-faculty ratio. Data was retrieved from IPEDs, courtesy of the National Center for Education Statistics, as well as U.S. News & World Report and Payscale.
The ranking for the Best Colleges in Washington finds University of Washington in the top spot. Whitman College in Walla Walla is in second, and University of Washington-Bothell rounds out the top three.
