Kansas's Foresight 2020 program is a ten-year plan for the state's public higher education system. This agenda seeks to increase higher education attainment among Kansas residents, improve the relationship between the higher education system and the economic needs of the state, and guarantee state university excellence. The statistics from recent years provide evidence that Foresight 2020 is having a demonstrable effect: the number of degrees awarded, retention rates, and average post-graduation wages have all increased dramatically.
"In addition to the state's efforts to bolster the academic and professional experiences of its citizens, Kansas college life is markedly rich in opportunities," Alyssa Koh, Managing Editor of College Choice, said of the ranking. "Students can earn free credit for past professional experience, acquire substantive scholarships, and participate in several grant programs, such as the Teacher Education Initiative, which gives education students a number of ways to afford college and find rewarding careers after graduating."
College Choice developed its list by looking at academic quality, institutional reputation, program accreditation, along with return on investment—the differential between tuition costs and average early career earnings. Data came from the National Center for Education Statistics, Payscale, the Kansas Board of Regents, the Kansas State Department of Education, and U.S. News & World Report.
The ranking for the 21 Best Colleges in Kansas finds Newman University in the top spot. University of Kansas is in second, and Baker University rounds out the top three.
