With constant increases in tuition, many students and families wonder if going to college is still worth it. For some, entering straight into the workplace might be the best choice, but it is worth considering that according to the Center on Education and the Workforce, 99 percent of new jobs created since the Great Recession went to people with at least some college education. And many of the people in this 99 percent have bachelor's or even graduate degrees.
"To go along with beautiful scenery and a very casual and laidback culture, the state of Oregon offers numerous colleges and universities of very high caliber," Christian Amondson, Managing Editor of College Choice, said of the ranking. "Students from Oregon, or who are interested in moving there for college, will be well served by our ranking of the state's best colleges."
College Choice developed its list by looking at institutional excellence along with return on investment—the differential between tuition costs and average early career earnings. The figures and information come from the university and colleges' websites, PayScale, U.S. News & World Report, and The National Center for Education Statistics.
The ranking for the 17 Best Colleges in Oregon finds Reed College in the top spot. University of Oregon is in second, and Willamette University rounds out the top three.
The entire ranking, listed in alphabetical order, is as follows:
