College Choice rankings of HBCUs are based exclusively on factors actual college freshmen said were most important to their college decision. According to the most recent nationwide survey published by the Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA, these factors include academic reputation, financial aid offerings, overall cost, and success of graduates in the post-college job market. Each of these factors were weighted equally in the ranking and data was derived from a variety of publicly available sources, including U.S. News & World Report, the National Center for Education Statistics, and PayScale.com.
Historic black colleges and universities play a critical role in America's educational landscape. "Not only do historic black colleges and universities produce one-fifth of all African-American college graduates, they also do an extremely good job of generating graduates in STEM related programs," said Jenny Castro, lead editor of the ranking. As the U.S. seeks to regain its competitive edge in the world and have the highest proportion of college graduates internationally by 2020, HBCUs will be at the frontline of these goals. "HBCUs serve as important pipelines for students whose families have never graduated from institutions of higher learning."
There are more than 100 historic black colleges and universities, a majority of them located in the Southeastern United States. Their origins date back to the mid 1830's, when many of them were established to teach freed slaves to read and write. Though open to students from all backgrounds, HBCUs have a historic and contemporary mission to educate black Americans. Historic black colleges and universities have been around for more than 120 years and have been important in providing students a place of academic preparation, community, and identity.
